2010 04 12 page44 45 reMIND prints, anyone?

To those of you who are still reading reMIND every week, I thank you. I know it's sometimes hard to adjust to changing styles and strange story arcs that seem completely unrelated to the adventure you thought you were having. But I guarantee this story all ties together and I also guarantee that every chapter will lead you in a new direction and hopefully keep you on your toes more then the average American sitcom.

I'm not sure what new to write this week. I have been chugging away at the coloring of Chapter 3. There are still a few pages of Chapter 2 that I need to tie up but can't get myself to do yet. I've been working on a T-shirt design as well. I'm clueless at shirt designs so it's proving to be quite a challenge. I can't show anything yet because it would be a major spoiler.  Sorry.

Thanks to everyone who joined the mailing list. It's been off to a slow start though. I found out that I need to put my address on every email I send out to comply with anti spam regulations. This makes my wife and I a bit nervous so I need to get a P.O. Box before I start sending mass emails. This might push back my first official newsletter but it will happen soon.

I also want to throw out an idea to see if anyone would be interested. What if I made prints of specific spreads as incentives for donations? I noticed this webcomic does it every month. For instance, I could have a print of spread 10 for $20 donations for the month of April. May would be a different spread. Would anyone be interested if I start offering something like this? It could help me pay for printing costs of the hardcover book and give you some limited and signed prints at the same time.

Please let me know your thoughts and if I have any takers! Going once, going twice…

Oh yeah…Please vote for reMIND here!

    Hey Jason!

That’s amazing, I love the motion and energy in this piece!! :D You never cease to amaze me!

Thanks Jason! It’s strange to be watching you as you type a comment into my blog. It still counts though! ha.

I know that some authors do sell prints or originals but I like comic themed poster or other merchandise better. Something that is not just taken out of the plot but visually independent.

    • Jason Brubaker

I see. This is good to know. I want to do stuff like that but it always takes more time since i can’t just use existing content. I’ll see what I can do though. Thanks for the feedback!

That’s a bit strange, though. Since people voluntarily joined your mailing list, nothing you send them can be considered as spam. There are millions of mailing lists out there and I guarantee nobody includes their address when using them. If you didn’t literally mean an automated mailing list, however, then you may want to create one to protect your privacy and save yourself the headache of the anti-spam regulation?

    • Jason Brubaker

Yeah it seemed kinda new to me too. From what MailChimp says (my mailing list program) it’s a fairly new thing that companies are trying to enforce now. I guess. I could be wrong though. But I also figure that in the end when I get reMIND printed, I need to have a company mailing address in the book too. If I don’t have a physical company address then I need to use my home address. So in other words, I need to get one for my company later on so I might as well get one now for the mailing list to just to be on the safe side.

I’ll look into the fine print though and see if I can find more info on it.

Including your physical address seems like a very odd request. I have dealt with mailers for a while and never encountered this unless it was for a retail entity that had a physical presence somewhere.

If mail chimp is asking you to do this then definitely go elsewhere if it makes you uncomfortable. I use campaignmonitor.com and like it quite a bit. Or you can use open source options if you are up for the coding challenge. The last one I used was dada mail but I recall it being a bit buggy.

I would buy prints. I like the original poster idea from mt as well. Those might be easier to sell to nonfan types at conventions. Assuming that you’re going to pimp your stuff (and I mean art work) at conventions.

    • Jason Brubaker

I’m all about pimping my stuff (art) at cons and I plan on printing up stuff to had out at the Ape con and San Diego Con this year. I still don’t know what to print yet but all the comments are helping me get a good idea of what would be smart. Thanks again John.

nice work Jason… I have to admit that remind is now in my “things to do on Monday” task block.

    • Jason Brubaker

Haha, great to hear! Now what about the Thursday post? I hope it’s worthy of a weekly visit as well. Wow, talk about a high pressure salesman.

Hate to nitpick, Jason, but you have a superfluous apostrophe in the second speech bubble – “in its claw” not “in it’s claw.”

But the page itself is terriffic! I’m working up an article on backgrounding right now, and this is a real example of how very abstract backgrounds can be extremely effective, with areas of high detail counterpointed by long, deep, foggy “deep background” that gives it a kind of field to sit against. Really nice work!

    • Jason Brubaker

Ah ha! Thanks for pointing out the grammar mistake. I’ll get it replaced soon. I appreciate the compliments too. I look forward to reading your article. Put a link here in the comments when you have it up!

I appreciate you not minding the plug – it’s up on my blog at Vicious Print. The first part, anyway!

Incidentally, I just noticed the giant crab is a fiddler. We used to have those guys all over the place when I was living in the Caribbean. They’d stroll up across dry land, and some of them were pretty big, not to mention ill-tempered. They’d take on dogs and cats if they thought they could get away with it!

Love the Spread – Giant crabs are always cool…

Would defanitley buy a print (if you ship to the UK though) love your work (looking foward to being able to get a nice hardcover of it all)

Always look foward to an update to the site, even better when theres new pages!

  8. Brian Taylor

I think a print using either existing or new artwork, but with captions/dialogue removed could be cool. New art is always better, but I understand about the time constraints. I also would love a remind t-shirt at some point.

New pages look great! Character design on the lizard is my favorite part, but the crab is cool too (crabs are always cool).

  9. Andy Bailey

+1 for a reMind t-shirt, victuals would be good for that :)

    • Jason Brubaker

I’m happy to say I just finished designing my first T-Shirt. I should have it up on the site soon.

  10. Kelly Lawson

Hey, Jason. Sorry for the stale post, just catching up on your blog. I’m in for a print if you do decide to do this. I prefer the comic pages to a poster, I like the idea of a framed comic spread on my wall. Seems kinda pop-art.

    • Jason Brubaker

Thanks for the feedback Kelly. I’m working at finding the best way to make prints so I think I’ll start offering some soon.
